He was so excited about recently joining the Cub Scouts that he wanted to use it (a camping utensil that can serve as a knife, fork and spoon) at lunch. School officials concluded that he had violated their zero-tolerance policy on weapons, and Zachary was suspended and now faces 45 days in the district’s reform school.

The Newark, Delaware school district has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons. Is the school district “in the right” to take this action? Has the school district gone “overboard”? Do you support the district’s move?

If given the opportunity, what would you say to the Superintendent at the suspension appeal hearing?

This is so wrong on so many levels. If he was 14 maybe,(because he least he should have known the policy) I can't believe these adults. If there was no outwardly violent behavior expressed, and he was just displaying excitement, where's the rub? It's great to see that kids, especially boys can still be excited about scouting. Is there a zero tolerance policy in place for sheer ridiculousness too?
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting!
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing! Your last question is a great one. People send me links to stories, and repeatedly I find myself saying, "Are you serious!!" I ask people this question, "How much of this kind of stuff went under the radar before our media feeding frenzy?"
